KAGAWARAN NG TANGGULANG PAMBANSA

23rd Secretary of National Defense

2001 to 2003

Secretary Angelo Tomas Reyes was sworn into office on March 19, 2001 as the 23rd Secretary of National Defense. Two days earlier, on his 56th birthday, he retired as the 27th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to close an illustrious 39-year military career that began when he entered in the Philippine Military Academy in March 1962.

As Chief of Staff, AFP, he worked towards the Vision of: “A 21st century Armed Forces that is fully mission-effective, progressively-efficient, technology-driven, versatile, responsive to change and composed of soldiers who are visible role models to the Filipino People.”

On January 19, 2001 , moved by the spirit of patriotism, General Reyes led the entire Armed Forces of the Philippines in a collective decision to heed to the call of the Filipino people for a genuine reform in society and governance (EDSA People Power 2).

He was able to maintain the unity and integrity of the Armed Forces, thus, preventing bloodshed and chaos. That momentous decision led to a peaceful transition of national leadership and ushered a new hope for truth, honor and decency in public service.

With Binangonan Rizal as his ancestral town, Secretary Angelo Reyes was born in San Miguel, Manila on March 17, 1945. He is married to the former Teresita Pernia of Minalin, Pampanga and Tagbilaran City, Bohol, with whom he has reared five sons.
